What is the difference between team coaching and group coaching? What is the difference between team coaching and individual coaching?
This article outlines the differences, benefits, and downsides of each modality, as well as the role of the coach.
What is Team Coaching?
Supports an entire team to align on a shared purpose and way of working as they strive to accomplish common goals.
Main outcome: To strengthen the entire team to work as a supportive system, align team members towards common goals and objectives, ensuring everyone is working towards the same vision
Benefits: Enhances team cohesion; alignment of goals; improves collaboration; addresses team-specific challenges; and fosters a collective sense of accountability.
Downsides: May not address individual needs as extensively; potential for resistance from team members; and it requires commitment from the entire team.
Role of the Coach: The coach works with an intact team or group of individuals who share common goals or objectives. The coach focuses on improving team dynamics, communication, and performance. They facilitate discussions, activities, and exercises to enhance collaboration, resolve conflicts, and align the team towards its goals, values, and expectations.
What is Group Coaching?
Coaching applied to a small group of people (typically 4-10), who are focused on developing through the group's collective wisdom, yet have individual goals.
Main outcome: Individuals join the group to achieve individual goals but do so through facilitated discussions and activities, accessing the collective wisdom of the group.
Benefits: Cost-effective; shared learning from others' experiences; diverse perspectives; peer support; and networking opportunities.
Downsides: Less individual attention; potential for personality clashes within the group; and less confidentiality than individual coaching.
Role of the Coach: The coach facilitates group discussions. They encourage collaboration and ensure that everyone contributes to and benefits from the group's collective wisdom. They create a safe and supportive environment where participants share experiences, insights, and challenges. While the coach still provides guidance and support, the focus is more on fostering peer learning and mutual support among the participants.
The main difference between group coaching and team coaching is that in group coaching, the individual joins for their own objective. In contrast, in team coaching, the team has a common purpose.
What is Individual Coaching?
One-on-one sessions between an individual and a coach focused solely on addressing the individual's challenges and achieving custom goals.
Main outcome: A client gains new awareness and insights about personal or work-related challenges.
Benefits: Intimate and safe space; customized support; personalized feedback; confidentiality; higher level of accountability; deep exploration of your specific issues; and flexibility in scheduling.
Downsides: May be expensive; may lack group dynamics or peer support; and relies heavily on the chemistry between individuals.
Role of the Coach: The coach focuses on the individual client's needs, goals, and challenges. They provide personalized guidance, support, and feedback tailored to the client's circumstances. The coach helps the individual explore their thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours and then guides them towards solutions and action plans. The relationship between the coach and the client is profoundly personal and confidential, allowing for open and honest dialogue.
The main difference between group coaching and individual coaching is that group coaching is naturally less focused on the individual.
Clients typically work toward similar goals, and while the coach will check in with individuals, they can't unpack each person's needs and challenges as they might in individual coaching.
